USADr. Kirkwood is Associate Director of the Division of Medical Oncology at the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute, where he has been the Director of the Melanoma Center since 1985. Following his relocation from Yale to the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute, his lab was the first to use antibodies, cytokines, interferons, vaccines and adoptive cellular immunotherapy for melanoma.During that time, Dr. Kirkwood’s laboratory also developed the first US FDA approved high-dose interferon treatment for melanoma in 1996.
