9th Joint Meeting of the ICS/ISICR
Cytokines in Infectious Diseases, Autoimmune Disorders, and Cancer

The 9th Joint Meeting of the International Cytokine Society (ICS) and the International Society for Interferon and Cytokine Research (ISICR) was held in Florence, Italy.
The overall theme for this Conference was “Cytokines and Interferons: from the bench to the bedside”.
We hosted ~600 international and local participants at this Joint Meeting in Florence. An outstanding international schedule consisting of Plenary Sessions, Symposia, Workshops, and Poster Sessions were arranged to bring together leading research workers in cytokine biology, cancer, immunology, virology and infectious diseases in a forum that emphasized the intersection of these expanding fields.

Young Investigators to Watch in 2011
Here are some of the emerging scientists in the field of interferon and cytokine research:
Dr. Gijs Versteeg has identified and characterized small-molecules that activate antiviral responses and could
someday be used to fight viral infections.
Dr. Mehul Suthar is studying how people respond to West Nile Virus infection.
Dr. Ming Loo is studying a possible therapeutic target for the treatment of hepatitis C virus infection.
Dr. Ole Hamming is determining how the protein, Interleukin 21, interacts with its receptor. This protein
plays an important role in immune system maturation and function.
Dr. Volker Fensterl is investigating a family of proteins that are involved in the host defense against viral
infection and how these proteins may function in an organ specific manner.
